Reducing Structural Impediments to Reporting Misconduct/Abuse

Campus incident reporting networks developed and evolved in response to changing needs and priorities, often in response to specific areas of risk or in service to particular demographic groups. These networks often struggle to function efficiently and effectively under the increasingly complex and specific demands posed by allegations of misconduct and abuse. Misconduct/abuse allegations require a coordinated institutional response, rapid action to mitigate and prevent future harm, efficient information sharing to facilitate effective decision-making, and assurance of an appropriate, compliant final resolution that maximizes the rights and safety of those involved, as well as reinforcing and fulfilling the institution’s commitment to an educational environment free from the impacts often caused by misconduct/abuse.

As a training opportunity, administrators will learn about the historical evolution of grievance process models for faculty, staff, students, vendors, contractors, and others, as well as how structural impediments to effective misconduct/abuse responses are often implicit in these various models. Administrators will discuss best practices for overcoming structural impediments, identifying key personnel, and developing model framework ideas for placing individuals and offices in strategic positions to respond efficiently and effectively.
