Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention for Student Leaders

Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention for Student Leaders is a comprehensive workshop designed to equip student leaders with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to effectively support the mental health and well-being of their peers. This training focuses specifically on understanding suicide prevention and promoting mental wellness among college and university students.

Through this training, participants will gain a fundamental understanding of mental health, including common mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, adjustment concerns, substance abuse, eating disorders, and suicidal ideation. Student leaders will learn about the prevalence of suicide among college students and the warning signs that may indicate someone is at risk. Participants will be trained in how to approach and communicate with individuals who may be in distress, how to assess suicide risk, and how to connect students with appropriate resources. This includes information on crisis response protocols and the proper steps to take when faced with an immediate mental health crisis or suicidal situation. Student leaders are trained to understand their role as a bridge between their peers and professional resources.

This workshop will also focus on developing communication skills, including active listening techniques, empathy, and non-judgmental support. In addition to offering support to peers, student leaders are encouraged to prioritize their own mental health and well-being by learning strategies for managing stress, building resilience, having appropriate boundaries, and seeking support when needed. The workshop aims to empower student leaders to create a supportive and inclusive community where students feel safe and supported.

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of common mental health concerns that college students face.
  • Explain the prevalence of suicidal ideation among college students, identify the warning signs, and apply appropriate emergency protocols.
  • Communicate and support students in distress and connect them to appropriate resources.
  • Demonstrate active listening, empathy, and non-judgmental communication skills.
  • Identify their own need for self-care, managing stress, seeking help, and setting boundaries.
